
The Child Development and Family Studies Program at West Virginia University (WVU) and The Early Childhood Program of the Fairmont State Community and Technical College (FSC&TC) have collaborated to develop a three tier Early Childhood Director’s Credential. The Credential is awarded at three levels based on the educational background of the participant. FSC&TC is responsible for teaching the first level and WVU is responsible for teaching level two and three. The courses for the credential meet the West Virginia core knowledge and core competencies. Courses are on-line.
The Early Childhood Director’s Credential is designed for individuals who are primarily responsible for the daily operation of a child care center or preschool.
To earn a:
Three Star Credential – Students must have a Bachelors (or advanced degree) in Family and Consumer Sciences (Child Development or Birth-PreK) or a Regents Bachelor of Arts Degree with an Area of Emphasis in Child Developement or Early Childhood Education. The following WVU on-line courses must be taken:

Apply to West Virginia University:
If you hold a bachelor's degree, complete the Graduate Admissions Application, submit appropriate materials (test scores if required, Undergraduate transcript, etc…), and submit a check in the amount of $50.00. If you are working on a bachelor's degree, complete a WVU Undergraduate application.
Once you receive an acceptance letter from West Virginia University, you can register online. Go to http://star.wvu.edu, click on STAR access and select "WVU Star System." The WVU online registration site offers many useful options. To use the site, you will need to log on with your User ID and Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Find your WVU ID:
- Go to https://centralid.wvu.edu/wvuid/
- Choose if you want to look up your WVU ID with your MIX account or with your social security number.
- Put in your info.
- Still having trouble? Call the Help Desk at 304-293-4444x1. Explain that you are an Extended Learning student and have them talk you through your technical issue.
To obtain the two or three star Director’s Credential, upon completion of the courses, participants must submit:
- the application form (requested from below address) with the following attached:
- an official transcript from an accredited institution showing a completion of an associate or baccalaureate degree in Early Childhood Education, Family and Consumer Sciences (child development or birth-preK certification)
- a transcript showing the passing of the online courses designated above for the appropriate credential.
