FAQ

What do I have to do to take a graduate course?
First, you must be accepted by WVU for graduate study. Complete the WVU Application for Graduate Admission to apply electronically. Submit your application with a $50 non-refundable fee to WVU Admissions and Records. Have the Registrar of your undergraduate college submit an official transcript to the same Admissions and Records address. (NOTE: If you are a WVU alumni, your transcript is on file in Morgantown.) Certain degree programs impose additional requirements for admission; e.g., letters of reference, statement of professional interest, GRE or GMAT score, etc. It is the applicant\'s responsibility to learn about and fulfill all degree admission, requirements.

What do I need to do to take an undergraduate course?
If you are an undergraduate student at WVU, register for an Extended Learning course as you would any other WVU course. You will have to pay the off-campus fee associated with a course. If you wish to become a WVU undergraduate student, get application information from the Office of Admission and Records.

Where do Extended Learning Courses meet?
Courses are offered in high schools, colleges, and local business operations that are conveniently located around the state. Many courses are also available via the Internet.

What classes count for teacher certification or renewal?
All teachers should check with both their county certification representative and the state certification office. Please keep records of dates and contact persons you talk with. Call the State Department of Education-Division of Certification at 1-800-982-2378.

Do Extended Learning courses count the same on my WVU transcript as on-campus WVU classes?
Yes. Extended Learning classes are identical to the WVU classes taught on campus. The transcript does not indicate the format or location of course delivery. The only important difference is the convenience of time and location enjoyed by the student.

Can a 900-level class (professional development) be counted towards a master's degree?
No. Professional Development classes are not part of a regular degree program at West Virginia University. Professional Development 900 - level courses may qualify as graduate credits for West Virginia teacher certificate renewal and salary upgrade with prior approval.

How do I know if distance learning classes are right for me?
The Southern Regional Electronic Board has an excellent website http://www.electroniccampus.org/AdultLearner/Attend/am_i_ready.asp that gives you tips on being successful in an online class. There is also a little quiz you can take to see if you are ready for distance learning. If you have questions about specific WVU courses, please contact the Extended Learning call center.

How can I find out about online classes at other schools?
The West Virginia Virtual Learning Network lists courses available at most colleges and universities in the state.

How can I tell if a course is on or off-campus?
A course section code can give the student that information. It indicates city, county, and whether the tuition for the course is waived. (Example: If it the course section code is 8FA, it would be in the Kanawha Valley. If the last digit is a letter of the alphabet, this indicates that the tuition is waived for that course). A number as the last digit represents a course for which tuition is regular tuition and fees (Example: 8F1). Here is a complete list of section codes.

How much does it cost to take a course?
Tuition and Fees vary by academic college.

What is a tuition-waived class?
Most of the time, a tuition-waived class means that you only pay the off campus fee of $40 per credit hour. The state permits tuition to be waived on courses where the direct cost of instruction is paid by an agency other than WVU.

What fees do I pay when taking a course outside of my college?
You will be assessed for the fees associated to your college major. (For example: If you are majoring in Ag & Forestry but taking a B&E course, an Ag & Forestry fee will be added to your bill for the B&E course.)

What are the fees associated with an undergraduate course that is tuition waived?
The undergraduate level course that has the tuition waived is still assessed a $40 per credit hour off-campus fee (i.e. $99 for a 3-hour course). If the student is not a current WVU student, an additional $15 will be charged to process the guest pass application.
