Substitute School Nurse Course

West Virginia University offers this course as the Initial Substitute School Nurse Course and the Renewal Substitute School Nurse Course. The Initial course requires the student to complete 18 clock hours which includes twelve clock hours of course work and a six hour internship. The Renewal course requires the student to complete 12 clock hours of course work. West Virginia Policy 5202 outlines the requirements for long-term and short-term permits (Sections: 11.6.1-11.6.6).

Course Goal
Students will become knowledgeable of the laws and policies that govern schools in West Virginia, learn the necessary steps to obtain their initial and renewal School Nurse Permit, and be provided information about the duties and responsibilities of being a school nurse.

Course Objectives
To provide participants:

  • Information on how to become a school nurse.
  • General information about school nurses.
  • Information on school laws and policies.
  • Information on Content Standards and Objectives.
  • Specific information about the expectations of school nurses.
  • Resources to assist school nurses.

Course Structure and Schedule
This is a non-credit course offered for 18 clock hours in the Initial module and 12 clock hours in the Renewal module. Cost is $157 per student. A certificate for course completion will be issued.

Prerequisite(s) for the course include an associate degree (RN) in Nursing. A co-requisite for this course includes a 6 hour internship in the Initial module.

Special Projects to be Included in the Course:
  • Participants who are taking the INITIAL course will mail the Six Hour Internship Form to the instructor.
  • Complete the course evaluation.

Methods of Student Evaluation
Participants will:

  • Read each section of the course.
  • Complete each section’s quiz with a minimum of 80% accuracy.
  • Spend a minimum of twelve clock hours reading and reviewing the information provided in the course.
  • Participants who are taking the INITIAL course will provide a verification of six hours of internship with a school nurse.
  • Respond to four scenarios posted on the discussion board.
