online Master of Arts in Special Education

Delivered entirely online, the special education graduate program has an open enrollment policy so students may begin taking courses in any semester. Courses are offered in the evenings through a combination of live, real time interactive class sessions via desktop videoconferencing plus other web-based activities available on demand. Field and practicum experiences are completed at local school sites proposed by the student and approved by the program.

This program is delivered through the Electronic Campus of the Southern Regional Education Board, which allows students anywhere to enroll and pay in state tuition and fees.

This degree assists individuals acquiring initial teaching certification, additional endorsements, and/or an advanced degree in special education.

  • This program provides online coursework and online supervision of practicum experiences at local schools in the student’s home community leading to initial teaching certification or additional endorsement in six areas of specialization: Autism, Early Intervention, Gifted Education, Low Vision/Blindness, Multicategorical, and Severe/Multiple Disabilities.

  • Three program options are available: certification only, certification plus masters degree, and masters degree only, allowing students to choose the option that best meets their personal needs or professional career goals.

  • Graduates of the program work as special education teachers in public and private elementary and secondary schools, as general education teachers serving students with disabilities in inclusive schools and classrooms, as early interventionists serving infants and toddlers and their families, as adult service providers for individuals with disability, and as administrators of educational and human services programs at the local, regional and state levels.

  • The program meets all professional standards for approval as a teacher education program in West Virginia, national professional recognition by the Council for Exceptional Children, and accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
