Online Master of Legal Studies

The online master of legal studies starts a new cohort every January. The program requires 36 credit hours for completion and two courses are offered each semester. Students take 21 credit hours of required courses and 15 hours of elective courses.

Builds greater public understanding of law and the legal system.

  • Offered completely online, the MLS program provides advanced education for professionals in areas such as human services, criminal and juvenile justice, journalism, social work, business, and others who work with the legal system.

  • Alumni work as court administrators and in other legal related fields. Many have used their advanced education to help advance through the ranks of the State Police, Department of Health & Human Resources, the juvenile justice system, human services fields, and a variety of other areas.

  • Faculty for the program are drawn from the Department of Political Science, Division of Public Administration, Division of
    Sociology & Anthropology (Criminology), College of Law, and from practicing attorneys.

Admission Requirements

Students must posses a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Students must also complete the Legal Studies Program application, submit scores from a graduate school aptitude test (GRE, LSAT, GMAT), provide three letters of reference, a letter of intent, and a resume. Prospective students who have been working in the field for five years or more may petition to have the graduate school aptitude test scores waived. Admission decisions are made at the end of October / early November.

Course Content

Students will study Law & the Legal System, Researching the Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Legislative Process, Law & Society, and Administrative Legal Process. Additionally, students will choose from several electives including Family Law, Employment Law, Healthcare Law, Criminal Law, Commerce Law, Constitutional Law, Media & the Law, and Administrative Ethics. Students will also prepare a capstone research project.

The program is not a “pre-law” program, nor a paralegal program. Credits from this program can not be transferred into a Doctor of Jurisprudence (law school) program.
